Character Design from about 2 weeks ago. I'll try to post the other ones sometime over break. I'm going to redo them based on how the crit went. This little guy actually ended up getting a lot of good reviews. I think shapes and color are going to be some of the main things I focus on for a while.

I just finished up these two drawings for character today. They both are different paths I've kind of been experimenting with. I don't know which direction I'll try to focus in. It will probably depend on how the crit goes.

Greetings from RISD. Sorry about the lack of posts for a while. A lot of things sort of happened all at once that slowed me down for a while. I'm back up again though and fully plan on keeping it that way. I'll try to post new art work later on.

Anyone seen my summer?

It's been a pretty crazy couple of weeks. Between trying to see Boston friends before I left, getting some paintings and drawings in, and getting things ready for the journey to Florida to visit my wonderful family, I haven't had much computer time. I did start and finish two of these drawings today in between laundry and such.

"Luchador"

( I shall call you Jose for now).

I was looking at some Luche Libre figures over at a store in last week and as a result started looking at some of the artwork from the comic. My guess is that this was a result of the unforeseen influence.

Fun comic though. I came across it a while ago, but never really paid much attention beforehand. I'll probably buy the graphic novel when I'm back in Boston and actually have access to a comic book store.

"Beast"

(Easy on the lab coat, Hank. Those things don't grow on trees you know).

I drew this as part one of a birthday gift for a good friend from Boston named Ron. I don't think I have drawn Beast since before high school, so it was a lot of fun.

Before I went to art school Ron was one of the only people I could talk shop about comics, old cartoons, and basically all other related branches of the geek tree. I'm helping him with both a Beast and Cyborg costume this fall. Last year we took on Hellboy.

Anyways, I guess this is goodbye for a while. I'll be back from my trip with my sister in about week or so. I'm bringing my sketchpad so with a little luck I'll have have some work to possibly show when I return.

Never painted before, figured I'd give it a try.

Haven't been feeling so hot the last two weeks. I blame busy schedules, but I'd rather be busy than not busy. I did manage to finally scan some color studies I did this past spring as part of an independent study.

Short of finger painting back in the day, I have Absolutely no prior experience with paint. On a whim I asked a professor if it'd be alright to take a break from line work and try painting. The following are some examples of my first month of learning how to paint. These are all color studies based off of Pixar concept art. Sadly the good people at Kinko's charge you for every item that you scan, (even if several can still fit on the scanner at once). As a result I just got a few scanned. I'll try to get to the rest later on.

I actually thought the first samples were absolutely terrible. If it probably wasn't for my professor's wonderful encouragement and patience, I would have put off painting again till the fall. I started it up again more seriously this week. We'll see where it goes. I really enjoy it, which is something I never thought would happen.

Back to Boston....my second hometown.

I got back to Boston a few weeks ago. So far just spent most of the time trying to catch up with both old and new friends before my summer class started.

Unfortunately most of my Boston friends work till late so it's very rare, that I get to see them anytime other than the evening. However, my friend Mack got Wednesday off not too long ago and we had a long overdue Boston adventure with his polaroid camera.

These are the resulting photos.

That fence never stood a chance.

Those were some mighty choice waves that day.

Q: What do you call an artistic slide you can't slide down on?

A: Lame.

It took us 4 months to finally meet up again and eat at that place.

In the five years we've been friends this is honestly only our second photo together.

More adventures to come I'm sure, but for now on to what I finished up at RISD.

I did this piece in April in between all my work. I probably should have been sleeping instead, but you have to sometimes make sure that you keep art fun. Otherwise, what's the point.

"Line work "

I'll post the concept sketch I did on this when I get my sketchbooks out of storage. It was probably the only thing I was really proud of all year.

"The Dog that bit you."

This piece was heavily influenced by Claire Wendling and Mike Mignola. Check out their artwork if you haven't already. It'll melt your retina.

Fellow RISD student projects, that I helped out with:

Up until about two months ago I was still in FAV ( Film-Animation-Video). As of now, I am happily residing in the Illustration department, but I still know how hard it can be to get an extra hand with a project, especially ones that require a lot of people. So I try to help out whenever I can.

I unfortunately don't have photos of the early morning film shoots that I helped my roommate out with. One of which involved the two of us trying to stuff a 7 ft couch into an usually small elevator at 7 in the morning, but I have a few pics from other projects.

My friend Patrick needed a sound guy for a few days. I worked the Mics for a few sessions.

I helped him paint the boat too.

My best friend and partner in crime ( my sister Jen), left for California yesterday so I'll be on my own in Boston for the next couple of weeks. Hopefully I can stay motivated and start painting again.

I am going to miss my clone though.

Yo.

I sketched this last summer in 2008. I finally colored it last fall.

This was a result from watching too many westerns with my friend Lucas.

I always seem to draw zombies on the train.

Not sure why.

I did the last two sometime in the winter. Fun style, but I will probably be taking a break from things like this for a while.

School Work 08:

These three pieces were done as part of a set for a "Creature," Project in my Digital Illustration Class. Great class and a really fun assignment. It was probably my favorite all year.

Bronze Castings I made from 2005-2007:

I'm not sure if it says on my profile, but before I went to RISD I studied Psychology at Wellesley College ( surprise!). Even though Wellesley is a Liberal Arts College, they actually had a pretty good foundry. I took a break from drawing while I was there and pursued an adventure in the lost wax- bronze process for a while.

These are the results. Let me know what you think. Comments are always welcome and appreciated.

That's it as far as the serious projects go. I actually don't own any of these anymore. They all found new homes as gifts for family members and friends.

Now for the Comic Relief.

Holy Loop Hole Batman!!!!

So my professor a few years ago wanted the class to do an assignment involving repetition. Being the responsible adult that I was, I chose to use this opportunity to make batterangs.

They are way too dangerous and heavy to throw, but hey I got school credit for them.

They currently reside in Florida, ready to aid me at a moment's notice, should I decide to ever become a local caped crusader.

Not my best work, but definitely the one that gets the most comments.

Spent a lot of long and dark nights making those (These jokes write themselves).
